Each year, more than 2000 women die in Burkina Faso complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. Most of these deaths could be avoided.

The rate of maternal mortality in Burkina Faso is very high, with 307 affected women per 100,000 births in 2008, according to information disclosed in June 2009, based on the general census of population of 2006. The high rate of maternal mortality shows that women are denied the right to health, a right that every state is obliged to respect, protect and fulfill.
